Landscapes

Picture
The work of painting a landscape starts in the fields.  Inspiration for a scene may come as he is driving locally or on a vacation.  Mr. Sibley takes trips each year to a different part of the province of Ontario in search of new and exciting scenery.  Ontario offers a lot of beautiful vistas from places as diverse as Blue Mountain near Collingwood to the wilds of Algonquin Park.

Sibley brings along his tools for painting outdoors on such an excursion.  Some of the best places to find great scenery is in a provincial park.  Each park has something unique about it usually found along the hiking trails.

A small 8 x 10" painting is produced that becomes the "launching pad" from which his larger paintings are done.  The general feeling of the day, the light and atmospheric conditions are all captured in this little painting.

As you will see, sunny calm days are not necessarily the the best conditions to paint in.  Don will go out on a windy day and capture the essence of wind whipped trees and water, something that a photo alone cannot distill.  Early morning and late in the day are good times to paint outdoors.  The perfect light of the morning is fleeting and has to be recorded quickly.  A mist that has been there since arriving is gone in a matter of minutes.  The sun that was behind the ridge has all of a sudden crested over the tree tops and changed everything.

Painting "en plein air" is one of his great joys.  Conditions may not always be perfect, there may be insects, rain, wind, whatever, but the satisfaction of getting back in the car after a couple hours being alone in nature with just the sounds of the birds and the wind in the trees ranks a close second to a fine symphony.

These bright colourful paintings are infused with texture and contrast.  Sibley uses a range of techniques from thin washes to thick impasto strokes to get the effects he is known for. The images are 100% original, taken from sketches and/or photography done on site. The result is a wonderful impressionistic modern interpretation of a natural scene.
